Mogadishu, 19 May 2009 — The Al-Shabaab group has said it will continue fighting until the government collapses and AMISOM [African Union Mission to Somalia] troops leave the country.
The spokesman of the Al-Shabaab Movement, Sheikh Mukhtar Robow, alias Abu Mansur, today held a news conference and commented on recent fighting in Hiiraan, Galgaduud [both in central Somalia] and Banaadir [Mogadishu and its environs].
He said his group will continue fighting until the government collapses and AMISOM troops leave.
The spokesman said they are united on the fighting in Mahas, Wabxo in Galgaduud, Hiiraan, and Mogadishu. He said they are currently involved in fighting infidel forces and their accomplices.
He said [today's] fighting in Jowhar [district about 90km northeast of Mogadishu] followed plans to isolate Al-Shabaab’s fighters in Mahas District, Hiiraan Region. He said an Al-Shabaab reinforcement heading to Wabxo was waylaid by forces he described as enemies of God.
He said Al-Shabab will not attack clans living in districts and regions that implement Islamic law, but will attack anyone supporting the interim Somali government.
The news conference by Al-Shabaab comes in the wake of current fighting in the central regions of Somalia. Al-Shabaab is currently fighting the Somali government and AMISOM forces in Mogadishu.
